Laser Engraved Leather Patches for Hats and Bags
Make laser engraved leather patches with a diode laser: choosing veg-tan leather, engraving and cutting the patch, cleaning, and attaching patches to hats.
Leather hat patches are a popular product for both personal brands and small businesses. A diode laser engraves and cuts thin veg-tan leather in one job.
What you need
- Veg-tan leather, around 1–2 mm thick for patches
- Optional: leather dye, conditioner
- Heat-press adhesive or a strong flexible glue, or a sewing machine for stitched patches
- Ventilation: a fume extractor or a vent to outside
Steps
- Flatten the leather and pin or weigh the edges.
- Mask the surface with transfer tape to reduce smoke staining.
- Set two layers: engrave the design first, then cut the outline.
- Focus on the leather surface.
- Run a test grid on scrap from the same hide.
- Engrave and cut with air assist for the cut.
- Peel the tape, wipe soot with a damp cloth, and condition the leather.
- Attach the patch with adhesive or stitching.
Settings
Leather needs low power and high speed. See machine-specific values: xTool D1 Pro leather, Sculpfun S9 leather, Atomstack X20 Pro leather.
Safety
Use only veg-tan or confirmed PU leather. PVC faux leather releases toxic fumes. See can you laser engrave leather.
Ideas
- Business logos for staff caps (with permission)
- Outdoor and fishing designs
- Monograms on bags and notebooks
- Club and team patches
What you need
Veg-tan leather
Vegetable-tanned leather engraves at low power with rich contrast and cuts thin for patches, keychains and wallets.
Air assist pump + nozzle
Blows a steady stream of air at the laser spot for cleaner cuts, less charring and a cleaner lens.
Honeycomb working bed
A metal honeycomb panel that lifts your material so cuts pass through cleanly without scorching the back.
Fume extractor
A filtered fan unit that removes laser smoke and odours when venting outdoors isn't possible.
