Laser Cut Christmas Ornaments: Plywood Diode Project

Design, engrave and cut personalized wooden Christmas ornaments with a diode laser: material choice, layer setup for engrave plus cut, batch production and finishing.

Personalized wooden ornaments are the classic laser project for the holiday season. Search interest for laser cut ornaments rises sharply from October to December. They are quick, cheap in material, and you can cut a whole sheet in one job.

What you need

  • 3 mm laser-grade Baltic birch plywood
  • Air assist for clean cuts
  • A honeycomb bed to stop back-scorching
  • Ribbon or twine
  • Optional: acrylic paint, clear varnish

Set up your file in two layers

  1. Engrave layer (fill mode): names, dates, snowflakes, the year.
  2. Cut layer (line mode): the ornament outline and the hanging hole.

Order the job so the engraving runs first and the cut runs last. If parts are cut first, they can shift before engraving finishes.

Steps

  1. Lay out a full sheet of ornaments with a few millimetres between each to save material.
  2. Focus on the sheet and weigh down the corners if it is warped.
  3. Run a test cut on the corner of the sheet: a small square should drop out cleanly.
  4. Run the job. Stay with the machine; cutting creates small flames.
  5. Pop out the ornaments and lightly sand the cut edges if they are sooty.
  6. Finish: add colour, a clear coat, and a ribbon.

Settings

See the plywood cutting rows for your machine, for example xTool D1 Pro plywood, Sculpfun S9 plywood or Atomstack X20 Pro plywood. A 5 W module needs multiple passes for 3 mm plywood; 10 W and up usually manages it in one or two.

If cuts don’t go through, see diode laser not cutting through.

Design ideas that sell

  • “Baby’s First Christmas” with name and year
  • Family ornaments with each member’s name
  • Pet ornaments with a paw print
  • Layered ornaments: two or three cut pieces glued for depth
  • Photo-engraved ornaments on light plywood

Batch tips

Keep a template where only the name text changes. Cut blank outlines in bulk ahead of the season and engrave names to order. See more seasonal ideas in laser engraving ideas to sell.
