Laser Engraving Baltic birch plywood: Diode Settings by Machine
The standard diode laser material: engraves with clean contrast and cuts in 3–6 mm sheets for ornaments, boxes, signs and puzzles.
How a diode laser handles baltic birch plywood
Baltic birch is made of many thin, void-free birch layers with uniform glue. That consistency is why it cuts so predictably. A 5 W module cuts 3 mm in several passes, 10 W does it comfortably, 20 W and up handle 6 mm and thicker. Engraving darkens the surface to a warm brown on light wood.
Before you start
- Buy laser-grade or furniture-grade Baltic birch; cheap construction ply has voids and dense glue that stall cuts
- Mask light sheets with transfer tape to keep smoke staining off the surface
- Weigh down or pin warped sheets so the whole area stays in focus
- Cut on a honeycomb bed with air assist to avoid back-scorching

Starting points, not gospel. Rows marked “starting point” come from manufacturer tables and community results. Run a small power/speed test grid on your own sheet before a real job — batch, humidity and focus all shift the result.

Tips
- Run a test grid on every new batch; sheets vary
- If a cut doesn't release, add a pass before dropping the speed
- Keep the engraved side up and the better face down when the back will show
