Laser Engraved Cutting Board: Step-by-Step Diode Project

How to engrave a personalized wooden cutting board with a diode laser: choosing the wood, food-safe placement, settings approach, and finishing with board oil.

A personalized cutting board is one of the best-selling engraved gifts. Weddings, housewarmings, anniversaries and holidays all drive demand. It is also a forgiving project: hardwood engraves with rich contrast at moderate power.

What you need

  • A hardwood board: maple, walnut, cherry or acacia. Closed-grain woods give the crispest detail.
  • A diode laser with enough clearance for the board’s thickness. Open-frame machines can sit on top of a thick board using a riser kit.
  • Food-safe mineral oil or board butter for finishing.
  • Masking or transfer tape (optional, reduces smoke staining).

Choose the side and placement

Engraved grooves can trap food and moisture. Most sellers engrave:

  • The back or a “display” side that isn’t used for cutting, or
  • A border or corner away from the main cutting area.

Tell buyers which side is decorative. It is a nice touch and avoids complaints.

Steps

  1. Sand and clean the board. Remove any factory oil from the engraving area with a dry cloth; oily wood engraves unevenly.
  2. Mask the area with transfer tape if the wood is light-coloured and you want sharp, clean edges.
  3. Place and frame. Put the board on the bed, focus on its surface and use the frame function to check the design sits where you want it.
  4. Run a small test on the underside or an offcut of the same species. Every wood species and board darkens differently.
  5. Engrave. Use a fill/raster mode for text and artwork. Moderate power with higher speed gives clean contrast without deep charring.
  6. Clean up. Peel the tape, wipe residue with a slightly damp cloth, and lightly sand any halo.
  7. Oil the board. Apply food-safe oil generously, let it soak in, wipe off the excess.

Settings

Hardwood darkens faster than plywood. Start from the hardwood material page and the plywood engrave settings for your machine, then run a quick test grid. Walnut already being dark, it needs more power for visible contrast than maple.

Design tips

  • Large, bold fonts read better than thin script on wood grain.
  • Family name plus a year (“Est. 2026”) is the most popular template.
  • Keep personalization to a text change so each order takes minutes.

Turn it into a product

Pair a board with a matching charcuterie board or a set of slate coasters for a gift bundle. See the business guide for pricing by time and materials.
