Can a Diode Laser Cut Clear Acrylic? Why Not, and What Works

Why blue diode lasers pass straight through clear acrylic, which acrylic colours do work, the workarounds people try, and when to use a CO2 laser instead.

Short answer: no, a diode laser can’t reliably cut clear acrylic. It is the most common surprise for new owners. Here is why, and what to do instead.

Why the beam passes through

A material only heats up if it absorbs the laser light. Clear acrylic is transparent to visible light, so the 445–455 nm blue beam of a diode passes through with very little energy absorbed. You may see the beam marking the bed under the sheet while the acrylic stays untouched.

Blue acrylic has the same problem, because it lets blue light through. Translucent colours absorb only some of it.

CO2 lasers work because acrylic strongly absorbs their 10,600 nm infrared beam, regardless of colour.

Which acrylic a diode can cut

Acrylic type Diode result
Black, opaque Cuts and engraves well
Dark opaque colours Usually cuts, test first
Light opaque colours Engraves, cuts slowly or not at all
Translucent / fluorescent Inconsistent
Blue (any) Poor
Clear Doesn’t cut

Workarounds people try

Mask or paint the surface. A dark coating absorbs the beam and starts the cut. It can mark the surface of clear acrylic, and on thin sheets it may cut partway. Once the coating burns away, the beam hits clear material again and cutting stalls. Not reliable for products.

Engrave the back of painted acrylic. Paint one side of clear acrylic and engrave the paint off from behind. This doesn’t cut the acrylic, but it is a good way to make edge-lit signs with a diode.

Use a different material. For signs and displays, consider black or opaque acrylic, or wood.

Cutting acrylic safely

  • Only laser acrylic (PMMA). Polycarbonate looks similar but burns and gives off harmful fumes. PVC sheet releases chlorine gas.
  • Ventilate well; acrylic fumes are irritating.
  • Watch for flare-ups and keep air assist on.

When to get a CO2 laser

If clear acrylic is central to what you make, such as edge-lit signs, display stands or cake toppers in clear stock, a CO2 laser is the right machine. See diode vs CO2.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cut clear acrylic by covering it with tape or paint?
Covering the surface can let a diode mark or partially cut thin clear acrylic, but results are unreliable and edges are poor. For consistent clear acrylic work, a CO2 laser is the right tool.
Which acrylic colours can a diode laser cut?
Black and other dark, opaque colours cut best. Many opaque colours work. Clear, translucent and blue acrylic generally don't absorb enough blue light.
Is cutting acrylic with a laser safe?
Cast and extruded acrylic (PMMA) are commonly laser cut with good ventilation. Make sure the sheet really is acrylic and not polycarbonate or PVC, which must not be lasered.
