Cheap, flat and uniform: good for signs, templates and painted parts, but dense to cut and smoky.

How a diode laser handles mdf

MDF is compressed wood fibre and resin. It has no grain, so engraving is even and cut edges are smooth. The resin makes it harder to cut than plywood of the same thickness and produces a lot of fine, smelly smoke. Engraved areas come out dark brown.

Before you start

  • Use ventilation to outside; MDF smoke is dense and unpleasant
  • Cut on a honeycomb bed with air assist on
  • Mask the surface if you plan to paint the piece later

Starting points, not gospel. Rows marked “starting point” come from manufacturer tables and community results. Run a small power/speed test grid on your own sheet before a real job — batch, humidity and focus all shift the result.

Tips

  • Expect more passes than plywood at the same thickness
  • Seal cut edges before painting; they soak up paint
  • Clean the lens more often when cutting MDF

Frequently asked questions

Is MDF safe to laser?
Yes with good ventilation. The resin binder produces irritating smoke, so vent outside or use a filtered extractor.
Why is MDF harder to cut than plywood?
It is denser and the resin absorbs energy. A 10 W module that cuts 3 mm plywood in two passes often needs three or more on 3 mm MDF.
