Laser Engraving Slate coasters: Diode Settings by Machine
Natural slate engraves to a light grey on near-black. Forgiving, cheap and premium-looking: the classic first product.
How a diode laser handles slate coasters
The laser fractures the surface of the slate into a lighter, matte layer. There is nothing to burn, so there is no charring and the smoke is minimal. Photos and fine line art work well. Each coaster differs in flatness and colour, which is part of the look.
Before you start
- Clean the surface and let it dry; dust reduces contrast
- Pick the flattest face and support uneven coasters so the surface is level
- Make a jig for sets so each coaster lands in the same spot
Starting points, not gospel. Rows marked “starting point” come from manufacturer tables and community results. Run a small power/speed test grid on your own sheet before a real job — batch, humidity and focus all shift the result.

Tips
- A light wipe of mineral oil after engraving deepens the dark background
- For photos, raise contrast first and try dithering modes
- Add cork or felt pads to the back before selling
