Laser Engraving Glass (with marking spray or coating): Diode Settings by Machine
Clear glass needs help: a dark coating or marking spray gives the diode something to absorb. Mirrors engrave cleanly from the back.
How a diode laser handles glass (with marking spray or coating)
The blue beam passes through clear glass. With a dark coating on the surface, heat transfers into the glass and creates a frosted mark. A marking spray fuses a permanent dark mark instead. Mirrors are the easy case: the laser removes the paint and silver on the back and the design shows through from the front.
Before you start
- Clean with isopropyl alcohol; fingerprints show after engraving
- Apply an even, thin dark coating or marking spray and let it dry fully
- For mirrors, mirror the design horizontally and place the mirror face down
- Use a rotary for round glassware

Tips
- Use the lowest power that marks; heat cracks glass
- Keep speed high and add passes rather than slowing down
- Let glass cool between passes
Frequently asked questions
Can a diode laser engrave a wine glass?
With a coating and a rotary, you can get a frosted or marked design. Results vary; a CO2 laser is the reliable tool for glassware.
Is laser engraving glass safe?
Yes with care: moderate power, goggles for reflections, and let the glass cool between passes.
